Excitement filled the air on a Thursday afternoon at Memorial Elementary School in West Springfield as Mike Bertera of Bertera Auto Group settled into a chair in front of a giddy classroom of 1st graders. As the students quieted, Bertera began to read the book “Two Bobbies: A True Story of Hurricane Katrina, Friendship and Survival” about a blind cat and dog, both with bobbed tails, who leaned on each other during extremely challenging times. The children were hooked. Bertera Auto Group is Memorial Elementary School’s Community Book Link Sponsor, a program by local non-profit Link to Libraries that connects businesses and community members to elementary schools in support of childhood literacy. When a business or community member adopts a school through Community Book Link, that school’s library receives 200-250 new books each year.

SPRINGFIELD, MA (WGGB/WSHM) - According to a Pew Research survey, students who perform higher on the reading portion of standardized tests are more likely to voluntarily pick up a book, but access to books is the real challenge. “What we do at Link to Libraries is to get books into the hands and homes of the students and also into the school libraries,” said Laurie Flynn, president of Link to Libraries.

(Mass Appeal) – Doors to our local schools are all opening right now and kids are excited to see their friends and be back in the classroom. But we as parents, grandparents, and guardians need to make sure the learning doesn’t end on the school grounds. One fun and important way to keep kids learning at home is through reading. Laurie Flynn, President and CEO of Link to Libraries is here with more.

Link to Libraries President and CEO Laurie Flynn called it a “full circle” moment as the book was donated to Springfield’s Warner School — the same school that was the first recipient of books when the nonprofit organization was founded in 2008 by Susan Jaye-Kaplan and Janet Crimmins.
